How many times does a project fail because the members don’t believe it’s doable. Unrealistic goals and objectives are often to blame. Sometimes timelines because the project started too late, others because of lack of resources. It doesn’t really matter, the project is likely to fail because the team don’t believe in it. Here is my checklist to ensure goals and objectives are achievable.
- Clearly set overall goals that have been discussed, reviewed and agreed with the team as realistic.
- Management team support for these goals.
- Specific objectives from these goals. e.g. increase sales by 10% within a 12 month period without increasing staff overhead.
- Involve everyone who is affected by the project up front, even those on the fringe who could impact it’s outcome.
- Budgetary and ROI support for the goals and objectives. Return on Investment analysis and other support to fund the project effectively.
- Transparent communication of project Goals and Objectives at the beginning and through the project.
