When the time comes to call it quits

May 9th, 2011 by TaskMap

A some point in your life you will become involved in a project that doesn’t work out. While mostly in this blog, I try and keep an upbeat atmosphere, with a combination of best practices that will help us have success or “save” a project. However, there are times when you just have to call it quits and move on to something else.

The end

Making these decisions can be very painful, as none of likes to fail. However, there comes a point when you cannot stay involved in a project or situation that is eating away at your core. When our integrity, beliefs and standards are compromised beyond our comfort level it is time to call it quits.

While I have been fortunate in most of my work experience for most of my life, there have been times when you are involved in project that just feels plain wrong. Here are some of my pain checkpoints may cause me to bail or avoid an assignment.

  • Incompetent management who are unwilling to change behavior
  • Employee or staff harassment which is tolerated or unchecked by management
  • Dangerous practices that could cause injury or endanger staff or clients
  • Less than courteous treatment of customers
  • Distant or disinterested management
  • Completely unreasonable goals or changing expectations from a project
  • Hostile and/or non transparent management practices
