Yesterday, I had a lengthy and enjoyable interview with Bob Yovovich who is working on PMI’s Executive Guide on Project Management for 2011. Not to steal his thunder, but he was fishing for what he felt was needed in organizations today to implement effective project management skills and activities.
This got me thinking about the major reasons why organizations don’t do it effectively and stay with the status quo. Three reasons strike me as key inhibitors:
- Lack of bandwidth. Many managers and staff members running projects don’t have time to change the way (perhaps less than efficient) they are running projects in their organizations.

- Don’t believe in Project Planning. Many organizations are in “just do it” mode, and will not dedicate time for project planning. Resulting in projects that are continuingly being revised, budgeted or changed.
- Lack of investment in Project Management skills. In the United States at least, most organizations are not investing in the people, technical or strategic skills required to improve their project effectiveness. Most skills development is driven from the employee not from the organization.
