We all recognize leadership in projects, businesses and organizations. Today, in the United States we are looking hard to find it in our politicians. Now this is not a political column, but there are times when we look around us and just despair at the lack of leadership. The summer of 2011 will go down in history as one of those times.
When things go wrong in projects, it can also be problematic. However, something funny usually happens in business or in your organization to turn themselves around. Something that is currently missing from our governing politicians. Leadership.
I guess it’s not just a leadership issue; project managers, executives and staff usually row in the same direction. When they diverge, we need goals and objectives to reset our course towards common achievements. Once defined we then canvas, communicate and work together to make them happen.
The Blame Game
When you see the President of the United States on prime time TV encourage the people of this country to jam the switchboards of Congress and the Senate to complain, something is very wrong. It’s like having the CEO of a company blaming the Board of Directors or his staff for all the problems. Employees want leadership and the Board of Directors want results, therefore a CEO is at the fulcrum of which way the balance is going to tip.
As in our projects, there is little to gain from blaming someone. While leadership is needed in both good and bad times, great leadership is required in bad times.
Don’t resort to The Blame Game in your projects, problems exist and we are paid to resolve them. Both financially and professionally.
