Over the next couple of weeks we will examine some of the problems that many organizations have presenting process information to others. Today we will start with the issue of density.
Density
The amount of information that is presented in a process flow chart needs to be at the correct “density” for the audience. By this we mean:
- The appropriate amount of information is there for the reader to follow it easily, not too much, not too little
- The spacing and layout makes it simple to follow
- It can be viewed easily on typical available viewing devices such as display monitors or available printers
The following diagram shows what happens when these rules are not followed. This map looks more like a circuit diagram and would need to be printed or projected on a wall for someone to follow it effectively.
Even when it’s broken down into sections, this map doesn’t work as the links to other sections are not present.
