Making process maps readable has a number of dimensions. As the process map illustrates the flow of action for the process, adding numbers to tasks and highlighting roles can also be very helpful to reader. Here’s why:
- By numbering the tasks, an implied order is shown to the reader, making it easier to follow
- Up to 15% of tasks are repetitive in processes within the organization, by giving them a unique number you can reduce the need to duplicate them, and ensure “the best way” is used every time
- Task numbers can also refer to other documents or indexing scheme you may be using in your process and documentation models
- Roles show who is responsible for getting the work done. Depending on your system, you may have more than one role visible. These can be added via swimlanes, annotations or other graphic markers
